Double Garage Wednesday #5

Sorry it's been a while! I've got a couple of tunes with nice basslines here. This is where you crank up your speakers nice and loud and wish that the sound quality wasn't so bad. It'll be like the turn of the millennium all over again, but with a much faster connection.

Elephant Stone

I woke up with my headphones on - I'm not totally sure why - and in all honesty I can't think of a better song to wake up to on a Sunday morning than this:

Intertextualité #5

When James Brown produced Think (About It) for Lyn Collins, he had no idea what he was doing. OK, he made a fairly flawless job of it. But he had no idea that shouting 'Yeah!' and 'Woo!' during the break section would give birth to one of the most ubiquitous samples in modern music. I could have picked out any number of songs that feature the reversed 'Woo! Yeah!' break, but few of them are as engaging as Dizzee Rascal's Pussyole. I can't be certain that this was intended, but I love how both songs basically tell people to have a stern word with themselves. Guess which song makes me feel aggressive and which makes me fancy a dance:

Lyn Collins - Think (About It) (mp3)
Dizzee Rascal - Pussyole (mp3)

PS: Compare Pussyole to Wiley's response and you'll see why Dizzee is bigger and better. Dizzee was blatantly having a pop at Wiley, but having a friend make up excuses about not fighting your corner, for example, is far from exclusive. It's personal to him, but it involves you by drawing on your own experiences. That's artistry. Erm, Dizzee for PM?

I don't care if you wouldn't, I would

I can't even remember how I stumbled across this blog (I dread to think), but it's superb. If you like intensely un-PC humour about famous women who are aesthetically challenged then idontcareifyouwouldntiwould.blogspot.com is the place to click. Here's a taste:
Its not that I have anything against chubby chicks. In fact, love them. Its just that I never really noticed how hot she was until her mother , brother and 7 year old nephew were brutally murdered.
Talking about Jennifer Hudson, of course.

Double Garage Wednesday #4

Some beautiful tracks this week. First we have the Todd Edwards remix of Crazy Love by MJ Cole. I always liked Todd Edwards more when he wasn't lacing his music with messages about Jesus. We also have the vocal talents of Robbie Craig. You know him - he was the singer on Woman Trouble who wasn't Craaaiiiig David.

History

Well, the inevitable happened: I started my boring new job and neglected my blog. Sorry about that. Having a proper daily routine has been quite a shock to the system. And at the weekend I completed a ludicrous 'drink your age in pints challenge', which knocked out both Saturday and Sunday. I feel lucky to be alive, but never mind about that.

Tomorrow's an exciting prospect, isn't it? I really hope Obama manages it. Sarah Palin worries me in a big way. Seriously. Most would-be beauty queens are bullshitting when they threaten to bring about world peace, but this woman is like all four horsemen rolled into one. In any case, I'm sure most of us will be glad to see the back of Bush. Then again, he did give us a few laughs along the way. (Small consolation for ruining large parts of the world, sure.) He also inspired some edgy, brave, heart-pounding music - music that will soon be consigned to history, just like the warmongering chimp himself:

Radiohead - The Gloaming (DJ Shadow Remix)

Immortal Technique - Bin Laden (mp3)
Bloc Party - Helicopter (mp3)
M.I.A. - M.I.A. (Arular Bonus Track) (mp3)
